Event Highlights Term 1 2017
NUSPA Chancellor’s Challenge Shield and NTU CAS Challenge 18 March 2017
TPJC fielded two teams in the 2017 Chancellor’s Challenge Shield, a current affairs quiz competition organised by the NUS Students’ Political Association held on 18 March 2017. Both teams performed well in their presentations and in the quick-fire quiz round. In addition, Muhammad Iskandar B Mohd R (16S20), Joel Tan (16A05) and Nuryn Alfiah Baiduri Bte J (16A03) won the Best Speaker Award of the respective discussion groups they were assigned to in the second half of the competition.
3 JC1 students also participated in the NTU Current Affairs Society’s Challenge held on the same day, putting up a good fight against other strong teams.
2017 National Schools Bouldering Championship
Congratulations to our TPJC Rock Climbers for their outstanding performance in the 2017 National Schools Bouldering Championship! Our ‘A’ Division Boys emerged as the Overall Champion for the Team Category!! The team comprised of Tan Wei Zhi Nicholas (16S12), Lim Tze Hao (16S05), Bryan Khoo Chin How (16S06), Leam Ming Yao (16S18) and Philus Tan Bai Rong (17S02).
Congratulations to our 4 finalists as well for their great performance today!! Teo Hui Qing, Jamie (17S19) clinched the 2nd Place for the ‘A’ Div Girls Category. In addition, for the ‘A’ Div Boys Finals, Bryan Khoo Chin How (16S06) came in at 7th Place, Leam Ming Yao (16S18) clinched the 3rd Place and Philus Tan Bai Rong (17S02) came in First!

2017 Dinner and Dialogue with Principal for Parents
The Dinner and Dialogue with Principal was held on 10 Mar 2017 for our Parent Support Group (PSG). After the Principal’s address, JC1 parents gained a deeper insight into General Paper and Project Work from the sharing by the respective Heads of Department whilst the JC2 members dialogued with university representatives from NUS, NTU, SMU and SUTD. In addition, many parents came forth to support the PSG booth selling cards and T-shirts for the upcoming PSG-helmed Power Up Stations during the Night Study Programme in Term 2. It was truly an evening of deep learning and engagement with our PSG.
Farewell to Ms Salome Sim and Mdm Devi
Today marks the last day in TPJC for Miss Salome Sim who has been seconded to OBS and Mdm Devi who is retiring after 31 years of illustrious service. We wish them the very best from all of us at TPJC.
TPJC 31st College Road Run
The 31st College Road Run as held on 8 March 2017 at East Coast Park. There were student and staff races as well as a mass walk and run together as a TPJC family.
Our Guest of Honour, Ms Rachpal Kaur (87A07) shared her personal experience as a marathoner persevering and overcoming challenges faced during her race to complete it successfully. Through her sharing, students were encouraged to be resilient and resolute in working towards their goals.\
JC Experiential Programme (JXP) 2017 for SM2 PRC Undergraduate Scholars
TPJC hosted a group of 15 Senior Middle 2 PRC scholars from 27th Feb (Mon) to 3rd March (Fri) 2017. These scholars are currently doing 10-month Bridging Programme in SUTD before admission into the local universities.
The JXP programme provides the scholars with the opportunity to interact with our local students and gain an insight into our Pre-U education system, as well as enriching both the lives of our local students and scholars through cross-cultural exchanges.
Celebrating the Achievements of Class 2016
Following the release of the GCE A Level results on 24th February 2017, TPJC celebrated the achievements and effort of all staff and students with an in-house party filled with pizzas & ice-cream. Let the PARTY BEGIN!
JC1 Parent-Teacher Meeting
Close to 900 parents attended the JC1 Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM) on the evening of 1 March 2017. They gained a better understanding of our College and its programmes from the PTM Address by our School Leaders and Key Personnel as well as the interaction session with their child’s Civics Tutor in the classrooms. To wrap up this meaningful evening, the JC1 students presented red eggs dyed in class, hand-made cards and traditional kueh to show gratitude and appreciation to their parents.
Ms Nora on MLS
We wish Ms Nora a safe trip as she goes on a learning journey to Korea as part of her Management and Leadership in School (MLS) Programme.

NUS Political Association Debate Tournament
International Biomedical Quiz 2017
The International Biomedical Quiz held on 22 Feb 2017 was a battle of both wit and grit. Team TPJC, comprising our very own POLARIS Science students Jocelyn Choy, Rachel Lim, Ryan Lau and Aaron Tan (all 16S13), was pitted against both overseas and local delegates. We are proud to share that Rachel clinched a Bronze medal. Well done, team TPJC!
[NE] Tampines West Emergency Preparedness Day
Mindful of global developments that may threaten our peace and security, the TPJC Civil Defence Lionhearters stepped up to serve the Tampines community by spending their Saturday morning imparting basic CPR and Improvised First Aid Skills (IFAS) to residents at the Tampines West Emergency Preparedness Day.
16th Wing’s-Active SG run on 18th Feb 2017
Team participated in the 16th Wing’s-Active SG run on 18th Feb 2017 at Bedok Reservoir. It was a good preparatory race for the National Cross Country Championship coming up in March. We had the opportunity to interact with fellow athletes from other schools as well as SEA games Marathon qualifier, Mr Soh Rui Yong. In addition, our Track and Field teacher, Ms Lee Ying Qi, who also participated in the race, came in 2nd in the Teachers’ category. Through sweat and tears, we have grown together as a team with the support of our coach and teachers. We are looking forward to more races as well as the upcoming National championships!
Total Defence Day 2017
15 February 2017 marked the 75th year of the fall of Singapore. TPJC commemorated Total Defence Day with a series of awareness sessions that aimed to spark conversations about Civil and Psychological Defence from 13th – 16th February 2017. One of the highlights of these sessions was the Heart-to-Heart session with Maj (Ret) Ishwar Lall Singh, a WW2 Survivor. Having experienced the darkest time of Singapore’s history, Major Singh wished for our students to not be complacent and take our peace for granted. The Central Narcotics Bureau also spoke to the JC2s about SGSecure and the importance of remaining drug-free so as to ensure our Psychological Defence. For the JC1s, TPJC-Civil Defence Lionhearters, who are also Civics Councillors, took the lead and shared about Singapore’s past and present threats, as well as the importance of knowing what to do during an emergency. As Singaporeans, even as we are grateful for the decades of peace that we’ve enjoyed, let’s together keep Singapore strong especially in light of global terrorism today.
Happy Friendship Week 2017
TPJC Interact Club celebrated Friendship Week from 13th to 15th February 2017. This year, Interact Club collaborated with POLARIS Science students to organise a booth selling helium balloons, candies, red roses and dyed roses. Profits from the sale are used to fund student-initiated programs for the elderly at Lions Befrienders, Evergreen Circle and Wellness@West. This was a good opportunity for everyone in TPJC to express their appreciation and gratitude to one another, portraying the spirit of TPJC Ohana 31!
Love is in the air!
Today, 14th February, marks Valentine’s Day/Friendship Day, a day when people show feelings of love, affection & friendship.
Our Principal, Ms Yoong, showed her love & appreciation to all OGLs from ORENDA 2017 by presenting each & every one of them a customised TPJC heart-shaped paperclip.
Hong Bao Special 2017
On 10th Feb 2017, TPJC Interact Club, Guzheng Ensemble and the Chinese Cultural Society organised a two hour programme for the elderly at the Moral home for the Aged Sick to celebrate Chinese New Year with them.
Prior the trip, TPJC Interact Club conducted a fundraising to buy basic necessities and food items for the elderly at Moral Home for the Aged Sick. Another portion of the money was also given to the elderly as Ang Pows. This is an enriching learning experience for the Interact Club members as they learnt how to work together as a team, put their values into practice and contribute meaningfully by bringing joy to the elderly.
CCA Exhibition 2017
Our College CCA Exhibition was held on 8 Feb. It was a brilliant showcase of the vibrancy and energy of all our CCAs. In addition to captivating performances staged by our Performing Arts groups, JC1 students also visited CCA booths and tried out hands-on activities organised by their seniors to get to know the wide variety of CCAs we have in TPJC.
Orenda 2017 – Success
We ended Orenda 2017 on a high note this week with a talent-filled Finale and the meaningful Badge Ceremony. We are proud to have students from over 100 secondary schools fostering strong bonds with each other and joining our TPJC family. A huge shout out to our passionate teachers, Student Council and OGLs, our enthusiastic JC1s and everyone who made this Orientation possible!
2017 JC1 Orientation
Today marks the start of Orientation as the next cohort of TPJCians join our TPJC family! Student Councillors and Orientation Group Leaders have prepared a line-up of performances, games and treats to welcome them over the next few days. It’s going to be a blast!
2017 Chinese New Year Lo-Hei
To usher in the Year of Rooster, the NE committee collaborated with the MTL department to organise a CG-bonding Bingo activity to allow TPJCians to better understand the customs and traditions of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
In addition, as part of our partnership engagement program, TPJC hosted and invited our College Advisory College, Parent Support Group, Alumni and 30 seniors from Lions Befrienders (Tampines) Seniors Activity Centre to join us for the mass Lo-hei. Our EAS, contract cleaners and canteen vendors also joined us in the mass lo-hei as part of our TPJC 31 OHANA theme this year.
Our teachers also brought their little ones along to immerse in the joyous festive celebrations!
2017 Dean’s List Awards Ceremony
We celebrated the academic success and character leadership of various award recipients during our Dean’s List Award Ceremony.
We are also honoured to have our alumni, Mr Sean Kong, as our Guest-of-Honour to grace the event and motivate our JC2s.
Mr Sean Kong is the Chief Training Officer of Halogen Foundation and he inspired our students to make their time in TPJC meaningful for themselves, the people who mattered to them and to leave a legacy for their teachers.
[NE] TPJC-CD Lionhearter Programme: Community Emergency Preparedness Training
The TPJC-Civil Defence Lionhearters spent an enriching afternoon at the 2nd SCDF DIV HQ on 25 January 2017 where they received training in Community Emergency Preparedness. This is part of the national SGSecure movement and Home Team’s effort to empower tertiary students to be adept in civil defence and to be willing to step forward to render assistance during an emergency. Our CDLionhearters learnt about the need for a Ready Bag, had the opportunity to practise the ‘Triangle of Life’ skills which include basic first aid, CPR and AED procedures, as well as basic firefighting skills to prepare them for their civic duty as Community First Responders. Our CD Lionhearters really enjoyed the session and definitely learnt many valuable lessons from the instructors.
2017 Student Leadership Congress
Celebrating Successes and Overcoming Challenges
The 2017 Student Leadership Congress, held last Wednesday on 25th January 2017, is an annual event that offers an interactive platform for all Student Leaders to come together and share their experiences and challenges faced during their leadership journey in Tampines Junior College. The Congress started off with an inspiring speech by our Principal, Ms Yoong, who emphasized on how Student Leaders need to “SHOW” their effective leadership by being exemplary in their leadership role. The participants then actively discussed at length and brainstormed together for effective solutions to common key challenges faced. Together, they celebrated their successes and shared their vision for their respective CCAs as well as recorded some golden tips for their potential successors. The Congress concluded on a high note, with the Student Leaders fully embodying the core values of leadership while striving to be the best leaders that they can be.

2017 NUS Malay Language Association Roadshow in TPJC
NUS Malay Language Association members conducted a roadshow at TPJC grounds on 19 January 2017 to engage MLEP students in a conversation about what to expect in university and how to cope with the rigours of GCE A level examination. Two undergraduates were invited to share their experiences and tips in preparing for GCE A level examination. One of them was our very own alumni, Muhammad Fahmi Bin Hazmi (2011-2013). In short, the students enjoyed the session and gained a lot of insights of university life through their interaction with the undergraduates.
2017 Department Retreat and CAC Dinner
2017 Department Retreat was held on 13 January to promote bonding over an afternoon tea break. These photographs captured some of the creative poses of the staff during the retreat depicting TPJC31 Ohana.
Open House 2017
On 13 January 2017, TPJC held its Open House featuring vibrant performances by various student groups, an introductory talk by our Vice-Principal, exciting subject and CCA exhibition booths helmed by welcoming staff and students, and college tours by enthusiastic student guides. Over 1000 visitors passed through our college to experience life at TPJC as well as to learn more about the A Level curriculum and our co-curricular programmes. They were also treated to delicious savoury and sweet treats during their visit, and definitely left with positive memories of meeting our warm and happy TPJC family.
